Recently, Nissan Motor Corporation and Honda Giken Industry Co., Ltd. formally signed a joint development agreement to standardize multiple electronic control units (ECUs) that form the core of next-generation software-defined vehicles (SDVs). The electronic/electrical (E/E) architecture, based on jointly developed ECUs and software, is planned to be used in the next-generation SDV models of the two companies from FY2029 onwards. As part of the strategic partnership, Nissan and Honda will continue to explore multi-disciplinary collaboration opportunities to accelerate the achievement of carbon neutrality goals and help build a future of safe mobility with zero traffic fatalities involving their vehicles. Especially in the field of SDV-centric software, which is the key to automotive intelligence and electrification. In view of the rapid advancement of technological innovation and the urgent need to enhance competitiveness by improving the speed of R&D and investment efficiency, the two sides have identified it as a key cooperation direction. Based on a common understanding of accelerating the development cycle and improving investment efficiency, the two companies have conducted extensive research on potential cooperation in the field of software. After discussion, Nissan and Honda agreed to jointly develop and standardize the core ECUs and software supporting the next generation of SDVs. Under the agreement, the parties will work together to develop common specifications for multiple core ECUs in the electronic/electrical (E/E) architecture of the next-generation SDV, as well as key parts of the in-vehicle operating system, middleware and vehicle control software. Through the standardization of these foundational technologies, Nissan and Honda aim to combine their technical expertise and development resources to increase efficiency, accelerate the innovation process, and enhance overall competitiveness by reducing development costs and achieving greater economies of scale.
