Tesla Optimus is in mass production! Ordinary people can have robots too?

On May 1, local time, Tesla officially announced that its Optimus humanoid robot started mass production in the second quarter of 2026, and the first series production model (Optimus Gen-3) has been offline and put into internal testing. The core mass production base is the Fremont, California factory. Tesla has completely transformed the original Model S/X flagship model production line into an exclusive robot production line. It is planned to complete the production line switching and commissioning within 4 months, with an annual production capacity of 1 million units. At the same time, the Shanghai Gigafactory has invested 50 Optimus Gen-3 units for automotive assembly workshop operations, undertaking processes such as seat installation, interior assembly, parts handling and quality inspection, accumulating practical experience for large-scale deployment worldwide. The second-generation robot production line of the Texas Gigafactory is also planned, and it is expected to be put into operation in 2027, with a long-term target annual production capacity of up to 10 million units. As Tesla's first mass-produced humanoid robot, the Optimus Gen-3 has a height of 173cm, a weight of 57kg, a walking speed of 1.2m/s (about 3.5km/h), a maximum load of 20kg, and is suitable for all factory scenarios. In terms of endurance, it is equipped with a 2.3kWh 4680 battery, which supports 10 hours of continuous operation, 10 minutes of fast charging can meet all-day operation, and the self-charging function can achieve 24-hour uninterrupted work. In terms of intelligent systems, it is equipped with HW4.0 vision chips, 12 cameras, multiplexed FSD pure visual AI large model, and completed the "perception-decision-execution" closed loop in 0.3 seconds, which can independently avoid obstacles and accurately identify job targets. In terms of cost control, the price of a single unit is 49,000 US dollars (about 335,000 RMB), which is 73% lower than the cost of the prototype in 2024. 70% of the core parts come from Chinese suppliers, and the cost after mass production is expected to fall to less than 20,000 US dollars. So far, Tesla has not announced when Optimus will go on sale, and the first models will be prioritized to meet the needs of internal factories, and reservations will be gradually opened to external companies and home users.
