BYD to Build 3,000 Super-Fast Charging Stations in Europe Within a Year; a BMW Senior Executive Holds a Different View

Recently, according to overseas reports, BYD has officially announced the introduction of its ultra-fast charging technology to Europe. The company plans to deploy 3,000 ultra-fast charging stations locally within the next 12 months, with a total of 6,000 such stations planned for overseas markets.
The ultra-fast charging technology introduced to Europe is identical to that used in China, with a maximum charging power of up to 1,500 kW — making it the fastest public charging solution announced in Europe to date, with performance far exceeding current mainstream fast-charging products.
In terms of charging speed, vehicles equipped with BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery can charge from 10% to 70% in just 5 minutes, and from 10% to 97% in only 9 minutes. In extreme cold of -20°C, a charge from 20% to 97% takes 12 minutes in actual testing. Even at -30°C, charging time increases by only 3 minutes compared to room temperature, with a 20%–97% charge also completed in 12 minutes.
Notably, the newly built charging stations will not be exclusive to BYD vehicles, but will also be open to other brands. Meanwhile, BYD will build the network through cooperation with existing charging infrastructure operators to avoid redundant investment. The first models to benefit from this network in Europe will be the Denza Z9 GT and Denza D9 DM‑i.
A senior executive in charge of battery production at BMW commented:“One must always be cautious about such announcements. Optimizing a single metric requires compromises elsewhere. We can increase charging speed, but that would mean downgrading other important battery characteristics.”The official implied that a sole focus on charging speed would come at the cost of battery lifespan and reliability.
