Chery Apologizes and Responds to OMODA 5 Suspension Accident in Malaysia, Has Initiated a Recall and is Conducting a simultaneous investigation in the Domestic Market
Recently, Chery Automobile responded to a breakage incident involving an OMODA 5 in Malaysia. The official statement said the affected vehicle was a 2023 model OMODA 5 and no personal injuries were involved.
Upon official investigation, it was found that the batch of vehicles may have had insufficient strength in the local welds of the rear longitudinal arm, posing a risk of tearing under extreme circumstances.
This structural model had previously been discontinued.
Chery's Malaysian subsidiary has initiated a recall for 8,878 OMODA 5 vehicles affected, inspecting and replacing related components as necessary.
Chery, adhering to a cautious principle, has initiated a risk-specific screening of the same batch of OMODA 5 vehicles in the domestic and related markets, and is actively communicating with regulatory bodies.
This screening is precautionary and proactive, and Chery will disclose findings responsibly based on the screening results.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our users.
The incident video showed the vehicle suddenly losing control during normal driving, with the rear axle detaching, thankfully without causing a secondary collision.
It is known that this batch of OMODA 5s used a torsion beam non-independent rear suspension.
Earlier in 2024, some owners complained about the rear axle breaking during driving, leading to a recall of 600 vehicles in Malaysia. Chery confirmed the issue was due to improper calibration of the rear axle welding equipment, and 60 affected vehicles were replaced with new rear axles.
