The 10-Year, 150,000km Cost Breakdown: Would You Choose Petrol or Electric?
[Autohome] Beyond the one-off outlay when buying a family car, day-to-day running costs deserve just as much attention. Fuel, electricity, insurance and servicing - how much does a year actually cost? Today we run the numbers: for the same RMB 150,000 family SUV driven for 10 years, what is the total cost of ownership, and how much residual value will be left at the end?
Note: RMB 130,900 was the previous group-buy price, which ended on October 15. A new round starts now: from 00:00 on November 1, 2026 to 23:59 on November 16, 2026, prices start at RMB 133,900, with a limited number of complimentary Voyah original charging piles (including 30 metres of installation) worth RMB 3,699.
Both cars are priced at roughly RMB 150,000 on the road. The petrol car also pays purchase tax and vehicle-and-vessel tax, so its on-road cost is a little higher. For energy, we assume 15,000km a year per car, or 150,000km over 10 years. The petrol car is calculated at 7 litres of 92-octane per 100km, using the September average price of RMB 8.3 per litre, which gives energy costs of about RMB 87,000. That figure will of course move with fuel prices and your own mileage.
The electric side needs more accounting. By current charging habits I would roughly split owners into three groups: those with a home charger who plug in whenever and ignore peak and off-peak tariffs; those who charge at home during off-peak hours for the lowest cost; and those with no home charging who rely only on public DC fast chargers.
Even on fast chargers you still save a good deal compared with fuel, and that is only on 15,000km a year - the more you drive, the more you save relative to a petrol car.
Beyond energy, the big items are insurance, servicing and day-to-day costs over 10 years, and finally residual value after a decade. The conclusion from the charts is simple: the longer your annual mileage, the more an EV saves you against a petrol car.
The 2024 Voyah Courage sold directly by the Autohome Mall: a mid-size SUV with a 2900mm wheelbase, from a flat RMB 133,900. It gives you mid-size space, a 77kWh battery as the starting point and up to 109kWh, plus an 800V high-voltage platform.
That is a benefit only available through Autohome's own mall (please click the mall link). During the Double 11 promotion it also includes a Voyah original charging pile with installation, worth RMB 3,699.
Where are the cars? 18 cities hold front-warehouse stock, so you lock the order when you order and drive away once it is locked. Buying a car today often means waiting, but this time the stock covers front warehouses in 18 cities: Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi'an, Kunming, Guiyang, Zhengzhou, Jinan, Weifang, Linyi, Suzhou, Handan, Tangshan, Harbin, Daqing, Hohhot, Tongliao, Baotou and Huludao. No month-long waits like some models.
Stock on hand, order locked on deposit, car collected once locked - for anyone who needs a car urgently, that "in stock" advantage is very real.
Where are the physical stores? A quick introduction to the 2024 Voyah Courage. Let us recap a few of its specifications and strengths. Personally I think that even though the 2025 model has arrived, the 2024 car's styling has not dated, and its colour options still hold up well. The 2024 model does not have ADS 4, but it does have a basic L2 assistance suite. For buyers who do not trust or do not want to use driver assistance, spending the saved money on better equipment or a lower price makes a lot of sense.
Inside, domestic brands now include basically everything you would expect, and even the 2024 car still looks good today. The Snapdragon 8295P chip is more than enough for ordinary users, all the usual apps are there, and the system's playability is high.
There are some nice touches inside, such as the small table on the passenger side - a rare sight, since trays usually appear in the second row. Do note that although it is handy, it is better not to use it while the car is moving, for safety.
On storage, domestic designs are well sorted now, and there is certainly enough space - you will never struggle to find somewhere to put things.
Which one suits you? Budget buyers: the Long-Range Smart Enjoy Edition, from RMB 133,900 - compact electric SUV money for a mid-size SUV. Range-focused buyers: the Long-Range Supercharging Edition (800V plus CATL cells), which removes range anxiety. Buyers who often face rough roads, mud or snow: the AWD Global Edition, the default choice for those who genuinely need four-wheel drive. Buyers who want the top specification without overspending: the Ultra-Long-Range Smart Enjoy Edition, with 901km of range, 800V and CATL cells - it lacks the Huawei driver assistance of the newer Voyah Courage, but everything else is maxed out and the price is more competitive.
Summary: apart from the difference in purchase cost, I have laid out the running costs, servicing and final residual value of a petrol car and an electric car above. Whether to buy petrol or electric still comes down to your own circumstances.
